Namibian UAVs
|
During a period of three months during Fall 2018, I aided North Carolina State University graduate students Joe Manning and Matt Snider as a field tech in the Khomas region of Namibia. The project was a wildlife aerial observatory that determined the ease and feasibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as drones and fixed-wing airplanes to conduct game counts in an arid savannah environment. During this time I learned how to properly fly and maintain DJI Phantom drones. Further, I became adept at identifying endemic wildlife captured on UAV footage. Additionally, I assisted in tracking collared carnivores (African wild dogs and cheetahs) using radio telemetry.
